Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas. Even 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock you off your feet and a depth of 2 feet will float your car. Never try to walk, swim, or drive through such swift water. If you come upon flood waters, stop, turn around and go another way. Additional information is available at www.weather.gov. The next statement will be issued by this evening at 1145 PM PST.

Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued December 16 at 1:16PM PST by NWS Seattle WA
Dec 16, 1:16 PM Dec 17, 4:00 PM
Significant rainfall over the past week has increased soil moisture
to high levels across western Washington. Additional rainfall of 1
to 2 inches is expected through the rest of today. This amount of
rain will continue to put extra pressure on soil instability, leading
to an increased threat of landslides and debris flows, especially
from recent burned areas. This rain event could also act as a
trigger for new landslides.

Numerous landslides have already occurred in the western Cascades in
western Washington. More landslides are possible.

Areas most susceptible to landslides debris flows under these
conditions are steep coastal bluffs, other steep hillsides or
road cuts, and recent burned areas. A diminishing threat of
landslides and debris flows will continue for several days after
the rain ends.
